Creating a student body who love to read

There is no doubt that reading can take you away to far away lands, to places you can only dream of, or to exciting adventures. The sad truth is that fewer and fewer children enjoy reading for pleasure. How can schools bring about a change of culture and encourage students to read more?

The first step is to model what you want – you should be seen reading more! Perhaps have a poster on your classroom door with your favourite book of the month? Or perhaps create a little reading nook in the classroom.

Share your experiences – talk to your class about the books you have been reading. If there has been an exciting twist, or a new adventure, they will love to hear about it! Take it further by asking them to predict what might happen next and report back to them.

Organise a reading marathon – perhaps an event that parents and children can take part in, for charity or for any other cause, get them reading!
